Experimental Typography: 78 Day Type Project
A semester long project for Experimental Typography class with Paul van Dongen at OCAD University during the Winter 2024 semester. The purpose of the project is to design one new iteration a day for a chosen Roman alphabet character. The chosen character for this project is 'R'. The final hand-drawn iterations are all scanned and later digitalized on Adobe Illustrator, edited on Adobe Photoshop and then bounded into a book on Adobe InDesign. The final book is a 240 page book, 4" x 5", with each page hand-cut using an X-acto Knife No.11 and bounded using PVA glue in single pages. The book is set in Nexus Typewriter Pro by Martin Majoor.
Experimental Typography: Film on 'REVOLUTION'
A project exploring the theme of 'REVOLUTION' through typography and film. The project is an assignment at OCAD University's Winter 2024 Experimental Typography class with Paul van Dongen. The film explores the message of 'empowerment through celebration' through looking at Women's Rights Movements, MeToo Movements, accomplishments and a lot of 'firsts' among the East Asian women community. The film also explores intention in design and storytelling through ensuring that every design decision was executed for a reason.
Experimental Typography: Type Installation
A project exploring type as art and understanding type in 3 dimensional spaces. The project is part of the second assignment at OCAD University's Winter 2024 Experimental Typography class with Paul van Dongen. The installation piece is intended to celebrate our hometowns' culture, heritage or story. This installation is an attempt in re-designing the breakwater structures in Hong Kong, creating new structures that can be both perceived as an art piece as well as a functional structure. The word used for this design is 吹水 (pronounced 'chui sui' in Cantonese) and it directly translates to 'blow water' in English. The phrase is used among the Cantonese speakers in Hong Kong as a phrase loosely referring to 'chit-chatting'. The typeface is designed and sculpted on Blender after developing hand-drawn sketches. Rendering and mock-ups were done on Adobe Dimension and Adobe Photoshop.
Experimental Typography: Song Posters
A set of poster designs exploring the concept of Yin and Yang through the potential of experimental typography and storytelling. The project is part of the first assignment at OCAD University's Winter 2024 Experimental Typography class with Paul van Dongen. The songs 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and 'Penny Lane' by The Beatles were chosen for this assignment and a custom typeface was created by collaging scenes from their respective music videos. The posters are also accompanied by other typefaces such as Parfumerie Script and Transport Typeface, while Rad was used as a reference point for the typesetting process with the new custom typeface.
